Digby Cave No. 1 by Sir William Orpen (1878–1931) is one of the artist’s most atmospheric and enigmatic works, capturing the vast interior of Kingsgate’s famous Smugglers’ Cave in Margate. Painted in 1908 during a holiday shared with Orpen’s friends William and Mabel Nicholson, the piece juxtaposes monumental geological drama with an intimate vignette of two women—Grace Orpen and Mabel Nicholson—absorbed in their own quiet world beneath the towering cavern walls.

Artwork Background

Orpen painted two versions of Digby Cave, both featuring Grace and Mabel.
