A Landscape with a Tree (1943) is a major modernist landscape by Irish artist Evie Hone (1894–1955). Painted in oil on canvas, the work demonstrates Hone’s mature synthesis of Cubist structure and lyrical landscape observation.
Modernism Reframed Through Landscape
By the 1940s, Hone’s artistic language had diverged significantly from that of her contemporary Mainie Jellett. While Jellett applied Cubist principles to structured figurative subjects, Hone developed a more calligraphic style—shaped by her stained-glass practice—yet retained vestiges of her early Cubist training under Albert Gleizes.
In A Landscape with a Tree, Hone deliberately incorporates overlapping geometric shapes set at right angles to the picture plane. These rotated planes compress spatial depth and introduce a subtle abstract tension, recalling her formative experiments in Paris. Yet the trees, fields, and built forms remain rooted in nature, reflecting her enduring love of the Irish countryside.
