About the Artist
Originally from Limerick, Dermod O’Brien (1865–1945) was one of Ireland's most influential artists. His journey as a painter began after time spent studying in Europe, where visits to the Louvre inspired him to pursue art full-time. O’Brien honed his craft at prestigious institutions, studying under Charles Verlat at the Antwerp Academy—where he met fellow artist Walter Osborne—before advancing to the Académie Julian in Paris and later the Slade School of Fine Art in London.

His early career included sharing a Chelsea studio with Henry Tonks, before he returned to Dublin in 1901. There, he made significant contributions to Irish art, becoming a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) in 1907 and serving as its president from 1910 until his death in 1945. O’Brien played a pivotal role in shaping Ireland’s art scene, serving as Governor of the National Gallery, supporting Hugh Lane’s modern art gallery project, and organizing landmark exhibitions, such as the first Oireachtas art show in 1906.
