Bring the spirit of Irish faith and Modernism into your home with this museum-quality reproduction of The Virgin of Éire (c.1940) by Mainie Jellett (1897–1944) — one of Ireland’s most pioneering and visionary artists.
Jellett trained in Dublin and London before moving to Paris in 1920, where, alongside her close friend Evie Hone, she studied under André Lhote and Albert Gleizes. Their analytical and Cubist teachings deeply shaped her approach to painting, inspiring Jellett to explore rhythm, colour, and form while remaining grounded in traditional Irish themes and spiritual symbolism.
By the early 1940s, she had developed a distinct personal style, blending landscape and figurative elements with a reverence for sacred imagery. In The Virgin of Éire, the Madonna and Child are flanked by St Patrick and St Brigid, uniting Ireland’s religious devotion with its national identity. The work embodies her belief that modern art could express timeless truths through contemporary form.
In 1943, this painting was exhibited at the inaugural Irish Exhibition of Living Art (IELA) — an event Jellett herself chaired. The IELA became a cornerstone of Irish cultural renewal, providing a vital platform for young artists and shaping the direction of Irish art for decades.
